Welcome 2012!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year's Eve doing whatever it is that makes you happy :) My husband and I joined some friends and headed over to Satellite in Silver Lake to see some bands. It was fun, but I realized that I may be getting to old to party into the wee hours of the morning. To be quite honest, I have never really been much of a party animal. I have been known to fall asleep in noisy clubs before, but I digress...

I know that a new year doesn't magically bring change and harmony to our lives, but I do see it as a time to reflect on the past and determine what I want for myself in the future. Kind of like a symbolic checkpoint. 2011 was actually a pretty good year for me. We finally moved to Los Angeles, which has been an AMAZING experience for us so far. Being closer to friends and family has truly been a blessing. I became Vegan and once and for all took steps to become a healthier person in mind and body. My home decor shop had it's best year ever and an extremely busy holiday season. All in all, I feel happy and content.

I normally don't make New Years resolutions. I never kept them and would somehow feel like a failure for not doing so. Not really a great way to live your life, so I stopped about 5 or 6 years ago. This year though, I changed my mind and decided to pick something that could be easily executed and add a lot of fun to my life. My goal: to participate in a dance flash mob! I've seen the videos of them and always wanted to be in one, so I googled Los Angeles flash mobs and found a group on Meetup.com that organizes them. Luckily, they had one already planned for NYE in my area - SCORE! I signed up, got the video link to the choreography and then immediately started talking myself out of it (I don't know WHY I do that!). Sometimes I can be a huge wimp and scared to try new things, but I didn't let myself back down this time. I thought "fuck it, you only live once". I went to rehearsal on Friday night and met a lot of cool people from all walks of life who just want to dance and have fun. On Saturday there was another rehearsal and even more people came out for that. The choreographer had to step away to teach a section to a smaller group of participants and I somehow ended up leading a group of about 80 people to go over the routine (I guess my past dance experience paid off in this situation). It was scary and fun and completely renewed my love of dance.

Around 3:30pm the entire group broke up and walked over to the shopping center where the flash mob was to take place. We sat around acting casual until the woman of honor (her boyfriend set the entire thing up to surprise her for her birthday) showed up completely unaware of what was about to happen. The music came on (Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5), her boyfriend jumped up and started dancing and then when the chorus hit, about 80 dancers joined in. The look on her face was PRICELESS! It was so much fun. The crowd was cheering and excited, such a rush!

All in all, it was a great way to kick off NYE! Now that I have my resolution out of the way I can relax until 2013 ;) All joking aside, I will definitely be doing more of these, it was a great way to meet new people, have fun and DANCE!

There will be a YouTube video of the whole thing in a couple weeks and I promise to post it here when it's ready.

  9. That sounds like such a wonderful way to greet the New Year! And I don't think you're alone at all in the almost backing out of fun things for no good reason :p something we all have to learn to stop doing eventually I think.
